Pledge Sunday
Sunday, September 25, we received pledges for our Hospitality Starts Here special giving campaign. You can still pledge online, submit a printed pledge card to the Church Office, or use the pledge cards available in the Church Office and Sanctuary Lobby.
Our WCPC campus is a welcoming outreach, a treasured homecoming every Sunday, and an extension of ourselves into the community. We seek the positioning of our campus to best extend the love of Christ to all those who encounter it.
When we lost our Oakland Boulevard entrance so many years ago, our “front porch” became located in what had been our “backyard.” We want to seize the opportunity to think about and act on making our campus, with all of its potential, into a more unified, welcoming, up-to-date, and attractive facility that best supports the mission and vision of WCPC into the future. In short, we want to take what was our backyard and make it into our new front porch and reclaim the welcome that reflects who we are as a community.
What are we Trying to Accomplish?
A special giving campaign beginning in September to raise $1.2M for much needed, and desired, upgrades to four groups of bathrooms (eight in total) and the kitchen adjacent to the Parlor. We want to transform these spaces from dated, high-maintenance, non-accessible, cobbled together, cramped and dingy spaces into larger, hospitable, accessible, up-to-date, water-saving, welcoming, inviting, and beautiful spaces with fewer lines!
Why Does Hospitality Start Here?
-
Our Values
This work is a priority for our church as it supports our values of offering invitational hospitality and gracious welcome to everyone who sets foot on our campus. Currently the bathrooms are unattractive and in some cases unpleasant, and the kitchen is outdated with limited functionality. As a church, we care about providing space that is accessible to all and in this case, for the most basic of human needs, we offer very little to accommodate a person with a physical disability. This kind of welcome does not reflect who we are.
-
Extending Welcome: the first building block
As noted in the preamble, we want to address the overall flow and use of our campus and that will be a lengthy process. The bathrooms need attention now and are the first step to having a more navigable, welcoming, accessible, updated campus. By addressing the outdated and frankly, unattractive, bathrooms we begin the process of transforming “our current backyard” into our “new front porch.” And, as we know from entertaining guests in our own homes, the two rooms cleaned and prepped first are the bathrooms and the kitchen. In a real way: Hospitality starts here!
-
Community Engagement through increased Facility use
There is also the practical side of updating our bathrooms, which will help us to better share and rent our facilities, thus assisting us in engagement with our surrounding neighborhood and community. We desire to be a fully accessible campus and have taken steps to address most of the identified issues from an accessibility study we commissioned. Remodeling the bathrooms offers the opportunity to take a big step towards this goal. This work also assists us with compliance for accessibility standards which helps us increase campus utilization and the ability to rent our facility to the community/public.

Hospitality and Accessibility
We care deeply about providing space that is accessible to all and in this case, for the most basic of human needs, we currently offer very little to accommodate a person with a physical disability. These new bathrooms will remove obstacles that may prevent people from coming to WCPC. We are excited to see how God will use this campaign to make an impact on lives, blessing our neighborhood and community.
FAQ
We are launching a special giving campaign for much needed, and desired, upgrades to four groups of bathrooms (eight in total) and hopefully the kitchen adjacent to the Parlor. We want to transform these spaces from dated, high-maintenance, non-accessible, cobbled together, cramped and dingy spaces into larger, hospitable, accessible, up-to-date, water-saving, welcoming, inviting, and beautiful spaces.

Yes. We care deeply about providing space that is accessible to all and in this case, for the most basic of human needs, we currently offer very little to accommodate a person with a physical disability. This kind of welcome does not reflect who we are and is detrimental to our ability to create an inviting atmosphere.
Sure! All the bathrooms reside in the Multi-use wing that is attached to the Sanctuary. There are two outdoor entrance bathrooms next to the church offices. These will be done first in conjunction with the women’s room above on the second floor which will be expanded to also include a men’s room. The second set of bathrooms is on the first floor in the Multipurpose Room hallway. The Men’s and Women’s rooms are below what will be two all-gender single, accessible, bathrooms directly above on the second floor. We will save money by doing two sets at a time as each set is vertically placed one on top of the other, and thereby, plumbing costs will be incurred only once.
After the bathrooms are completed, it is intended that we would enlarge and remodel the kitchen as well. The current kitchen is cramped, with tired countertops, cabinets, and appliances and does not ably support the ministry hospitality needs for events in the Parlor or the Multi-Purpose Room, two of our largest spaces on campus.
We hope to have the first set of bathrooms done by spring of 2023 and the second set finished by the fall of 2023.
$1.2M is a lot of money – and we are, even now, not yet sure of the final cost. We have a detailed budget but it has fluctuated due to inventories, available contractors, the need to engage project management services, permits, and material costs. We are managing costs and will make our decisions based on durability, aesthetics, and cost — in short, we are not talking deluxe, but value-driven, long-lasting, high quality bathrooms and kitchen.
We hope that the funds raised in the special giving campaign will suffice for the intended scope of work. All extra General Fund monies are tagged for building up reserve accounts to renew savings (which had been depleted), address the deferred maintenance projects that are ongoing and costly, and increase ministry activities.
We want to address other upgrades in a unified way – the bathrooms are just the beginning and will stay put when future upgrades are planned.
